Figure Drawing
- Develop volumes and masses of the figure through cross hatching
- Develop a scale of values
- Organize your marks to follow the natural planar analysis of form
Homework:
- Compose a drawing with two feet / two hands (or one and one) in it
- Scale your forms to take up most of the proportion of the paper. Compose the form and negative space together to create an interesting visual field.
- Place first foot/hand towards the bottom of the pictorial space (Placement Perspective)
- Compose the second foot/hand behind that drawing in space
- Think of activating negative space in your composition through a variety of values
- Make use of a full value range on both figures and within space
- Think of making full volumetric feet/hands - they should not have any contour lines that define their form
- Your cross hatching marks need to follow the planar analysis of the forms
- Think of directing a lighting source or sources on your subject
- Think of the emotion conveyed through each foot or hand's gesture
NOTE: Should you wish to try your hand at copying a master drawing you may do that instead! Artists to look at: Da Vinci, Raphael, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Durer
Drawing scale = 10" x 14" or smaller watercolor paper
Media:
Thin Sharpie Marker, Pen & ink and colored pencils, watercolors
THINK ABOUT the color temperature of the areas in your drawing - warm temperatures tend to advance, cooler ones, recede.
